The Henley Royal Regatta is an annual rowing and sculling event held on the Thames at the beginning of July on Henley Reach. Once fiercely amateur, it is now entirely open. Dating from 1839, it predates the founding of international sports federations and so is unique in having its own rules, while still being recognised by the official bodies. It attracts teams from all over the world to compete over the five days of the main event and the qualifying races the week before. The royal patronage dates from Prince Albert in 1851 and since then the reigning monarch has always been the patron. The course is 1 mile and 550 yards (2.1 Km) long and starts at the landmark of Temple Island. The Temple was constructed as a folly in 1771 and was used as a fishing lodge. The Regatta stewards bought the Island in 1987 and have had the Temple’s Etruscan style ornamentation restored. It is used for corporate hospitality during the Regatta. Other landmarks on the course are the Barrier, and Fawley which is just short of halfway. Spectators can watch from a number of locations, mostly on the Berkshire side. The Buckinghamshire side is limited to private clubs, private residences and corporate entertainment. A channel of the river remains open, so racing can be viewed from boats. The prime site is the Stewards’ Enclosure at the finishing line but waiting lists are long and a dress code is enforced. The event forms part of the summer social season.
