Henry Flagler Museum (Palm Beach, USA)

Henry Morrison Flagler made his money from his partnership with John D Rockefeller in the Standard Oil Company. The illness (and subsequent death) of his wife in 1881 had led him to discover St Augustine in Florida. Over the course of the next 30 years his single minded ideal had opened up the East Coast of Florida with a series of luxurious hotels and had built a railroad which connected Key West with New York. Two of his resorts (the Royal Poinciana and the Breakers) were built in Palm Beach which is where he established his main residence “Whitehall”. It was furnished with materials and fittings imported from Europe and was described at the time as “more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world.” The 55 room mansion has been restored and refurbished with materials and furniture from the period and has been reopened as the Flagler Museum. There are also many memorabilia from the railroad aera in the exhibitions. Tours can be self guided with audio narration or in groups led by a museum volunteer. Opening hours Sunday - Noon to 5pm Tuesday - Saturday, 10am to 5pm Closed: Mondays, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Years Day.
