Hilsea Lines is located on Scott Road on the northern edge of Portsea Island. Originally constructed as a military base in the 16th century and renewed in the 18th and 19th centuries, it consisted of ramparts, bastions and a moat. The structure was intended to defend Portsmouth’s naval base against an invasion from the north. In 1964 Hilsea Lines was designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Hilsea Lines also became a Conservation Area in 1994. It has received a Green Flag Award. Its 80 hectares consist of marshland, woodland, hedgerows, meadows, coastal habitats, and fresh and brackish water. It is the only area of woodland on Portsea Island. A natural history walk, lasting about an hour, may be made around the area. Eight interpretation boards are placed at intervals along the walk. Among the wildlife that can be seen at certain times of the year are the kingfisher, garden tiger moth, emperor dragonfly, field vole, kestrel, stag beetle, small tortoiseshell butterfly, smooth newt, dunlin, bee orchid, yellow flag and lords and ladies. A Countryside Ranger, responsible for conservation and restoration, is based on site. Guided walks may be arranged. Hilsea Lines is open all year.
