The Hofburg Imperial Palace was the former residency of the Austrian Royal Family until their downfall in 1918. It is now used as the official residency of the Austrian President. Whilst Schönbrunn Palace was the summer residence of the Royal Family Hofburg was their winter residence. Amongst its many famous associates this palace was the birthplace of Marie Antoinette in 1755. The palace was originally a castle constructed during the 13th century and the oldest parts of the building date from around this time but there have been many modifications to both its interior and exterior over the centuries. There is a 15th century Gothic chapel, a Swiss courtyard and the treasury amongst several other buildings, the latter is notable for housing the Imperial Insignia of the Holy Roman Empire. Hofburg Palace is located right in the centre of Vienna, close to the Museumsquartier Subway Station and stands within 59 acres of landscaped gardens. A part of the building has been converted into the Sisi Museum. It is open daily from 9am until 5.30pm (September to June) and from 9am until 6pm during July and August. Admission prices are available on the website.
