Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site near Elverston preserves one of the “iron plantations” that represented industrialization in America during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The 848-acre park serves as a large-scale museum for showcasing several restored structures supporting the iron industry of that era, including the furnace itself, a blacksmith shop, and a water-powered mill. Visitors to Hopewell Furnace can take self-guided tours of the various exhibits, or they many attend programs and demonstrations featuring the technology of Iron-making and blacksmithing. In September and October, visitors are also invited to pick apples from the orchard. Facilities include the visitor center, picnic areas, and trails connectiong the park’s points of interest and through the surrounding woodlands. Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site is open year-round. Admission is free, but fees are charged for some activities–including market price for apples picked and carried from the site.
