Hundertwasser-Building (Vienna, Austria)
This block of flats is the third most visited attraction in Austria. Designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser it is a comparatively modern building (completed 1986). Although owned by the City of Vienna it is not possible to visit the interior as the flats are occupied. The first feature is the tress, shrubs and flowers which grow on balconies and the roof and intertwine with those growing up from the ground below. Then there are the colours: each flat is delineated on the external wall in a vibrant red, blue, white or yellow. Further colour is provided by mosaic tiles arranged at varying angles to catch the light. Windows are not standard but of different shapes and sizes. Columns are integrated into the structure, not only for support but also for decoration, and two onion towers top it all off. Inside floors and walls are uneven and the layout is haphazard, to create a sense of an organic structure mirrored by the vegetation outside. There is a café on the site which shows a film of the interior and an interview with the architect. The building is in the City’s 3rd district, on the corner of Kegelgasse and Löwengasse, served by Löwengasse tram stop or Landstrasse underground station.
