Hungarian State Opera House (Budapest, Hungary)

Dating from 1884, the neo-Renaissance style Hungarian State Opera House was designed by Miklós Ybl and features statues of Liszt and Erkel either side of the driveway as well as statues of various great composers on the facade. The interior, which offers 1261 seats over three tiers and what has been proclaimed to be the third best acoustics in any opera house worldwide, features stone carvings and frescoes as well as a chandelier which weighs more than two tons and boasts 220 lights. Besides the opera season which runs from September to June, the Opera House is also home to the Hungarian National Ballet. Details of performances are available at the website. Guided tours are presented at 15h00 and 16h00 daily and group tours can be arranged. The ticket office opens daily at 11h00, except on Sundays when it opens at 16h00, and remains open until the performance commences. On days without a performance closure is at 17h00.
