Igel Column (Igel, Germany)

The Igel Column is located along the ancient former military road that used to connect Trier and Reims. The 23m (76ft) high pillar can be found right in the middle of the small town of Igel, not far from Trier. The Column was built of sandstone and dates back to the year 250 AD. It is the burial monument of the Secundii family who had made their fortune as cloth merchants. Today the richly decorated Column is the tallest still existing Roman burial column north of the alps. In 1986 the Igel Column has become an UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with several other Roman monuments and other historical significant buildings in the Trier area. The column is freely accessible, a copy in the original size can also be seen in the Landesmuseum in Trier .
