Isle Royale is an island national park in Lake Superior. It is the largest island in the largest freshwater lake in the world. Park headquarters are 77 miles away in Houghton, Michigan. Access to the national park is via seaplane or boats only. Public ferries are available from three points, Grand Portage, Minnesota; Houghton, Michigan and Copper Harbor, Michigan. Transit time from Houghton is 6.5 hours Entrance fee is $4 per day. However there are additional fees for the ferry trip. The park requires backcountry camping permits for any overnight stays. These are free. There is a group fee for groups of seven to ten people. Most of the park is wilderness area. The park is closed in winter due to extreme conditions. Due to the difficulty and length of time to get to the park, it is not ideal for a day trip. Activities include hiking, scuba diving, canoeing and kayaking.
