The Johannesburg Botanic Garden was established in 1968 and can be found in the Emmarentia suburb of the city. It covers an area of approximately 1.25 km2. One of the key features of the gardens is its Rose Garden with over 10,000 different specimens of Roses on display, these formal Rose gardens include terraces, fountains and ponds. The Botanical Gardens are arranged in several distinct areas, which include a Succulent Garden, Herb Garden and wetland areas. Facilities include a restaurant, picnic areas and designated walking trails. Also within the Johannesburg Botanic Garden visitors will find the Emmarentia Dam and a monument to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Huguenots, this monument is located in the Rose Garden. The Johannesburg Botanic Gardens are one of several parks in the city that are cared for by the Johannesburg City Parks. It is open daily from 9am until 5pm. Admission is free.
