King’s College was founded in 1441 by Henry VI under the control of a provost and providing accommodation for 70 poor scholars from Eton School. Apart from its world-famous Chapel (completed by Henry VIII) it also has a number of other buildings of historical note. The entrance to the Front Court is the Gatehouse built in the early 1800s by William Wilkins as the porter’s lodge. He also designed the accommodation courts (Chetwynd, Webbs and Bodleys) which run down to the River Cam. Gibbs Building which faces the Back Lawn was begun in 1724. The gardens, lawns, pastures and avenues on either side of the river are now called The Backs. The buildings and grounds constitute a working college but are open to the public.
