La Citadelle of Québec is sometimes referred to as the Gibraltar of North America. It is an active military garrison, occupied by the Royal 22e Régiment, a prestigious French-speaking regiment of the Canadian Forces. La Citadelle occupies a high point of land known as Cap Diamant and stands 100m above the St Lawrence River. The complex includes 25 different buildings and covers an area of 37 acres; it is the largest North American fort that is still occupied by troops and is a national historical site. Guided tours of the garrison are available and each tour lasts about 60 minutes.
