Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge (Metairie, USA)

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge connects Metairie and Mandeville in Louisiana and at 24 miles is the longest bridge over water in the world. The link reduces the journey time from the north side of the lake to New Orleans by almost an hour, and it is now used by over 30,000 vehicles a day. A toll is levied for southbound traffic only. The first two-lane span opened in 1956 and a second parallel two-lane span followed in 1969. The two spans are linked by 7 crossovers which act as pullover areas for emergencies. The causeways are supported by 9,000 concrete pilings. Drawbridge sections in the causeway, called “bascules”, can be raised for shipping. The bridge and the lake itself with its abundance of wildlife together form a major scenic attraction.
