Large Island (Strasbourg, France)
The Gand Île, or “Large Island” is actually elliptical in shape. It stands in the River Ill and contains the historic centre of Strasburg. It was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1988 because it is “characteristic of a medieval town” and has an “outstanding complex of monuments”. These include the cathedral, a fine example of gothic architecture, the churches of St Thomas, St Pierre-le-Vieux, St Pierre-le-Jeune and St Etienne, and the Palais Rohan, former residence of the Prince-Bishops. La Petite France is at one corner of the island, where the river splits into canals winding through half-timbered houses.
