Ledesi African Lodge and Cultural Village is a guest accommodation located at Broederstroom north of Johannesburg. Built in cooperation with five tribal communities, Ledesi features cultural tourism on a variety of levels. Ledesi’s five compounds reflect the living arrangements, clothing, and customs of the Ndebele, Basotho, Zulu, Xhosa, and Pedi peoples—each with their own unique identity. Visitors learn by living, joining their new ‘village’ for the duration of their stay. Day visitors may explore the food, drink, music, dance, and livelihood of South Africa’s tribal communities. Overnight guests actually share living quarters with an African family, lodging under the thatched roofs of ‘traditional’ huts. Somewhat non-traditional concessions to Western comforts include electric lights and heaters, modern toilet facilities, and bed linens comparable to those found in more conventional guest quarters. In addition to its daytime venues and overnight lodging, Ledesi offers a school program designed to foster a better understanding of South Africa’s tribal heritage among school children of the 21st-century.
