Lime Street is the main rail station serving the city. It is owned and managed by network Rail. Train operating companies using the station are Northern, Virgin Trains, TransPennine Express and Central Trains providing direct services to London, Manchester, Nottingham, York, Birmingham and Sheffield. London is reachable in 2.5 hours on the tilting pendolino trains. Merseyrail provides local services.
