Lime Street is the main rail station serving the city. It is owned and managed by network Rail. Train operating companies using the station are Northern, Virgin Trains, TransPennine Express and Central Trains providing direct services to London, Manchester, Nottingham, York, Birmingham and Sheffield. London is reachable in 2.5 hours on the tilting pendolino trains. Merseyrail provides local services. Passenger facilities include long and short stay car parking, left luggage, wi-fi access and shops, as well as ticket sales and information. Mobility assistance is available if requested. The station was opened in 1836 and although it has been extended and refurbished over the years the glass and steel arched roof from the 1880s is still there. It was the first station to send mail by train, was part of the first stage of electrification of the west coast main line in 1959 and saw the launch of the intercity service in 1966.
