Loch Ness (Inverness, United Kingdom)

Loch Ness occupies a geological feature known as the Great Glen Fault, which stretches from near Inverness to the east and Fort William to the west. The Caledonian Canal connects both ends of the loch with the sea thus providing a continuous navigable waterway. It is around 23 miles long (37 kilometres) and by surface area is the second largest freshwater loch in Scotland after Loch Lomond. Its surface area is 21.9 square miles (56.4 square kilometres). To put its size into perspective it contains more freshwater than all of the lakes in England and Wales combined. At its deepest point it is 230 metres deep. Most visitors travel along the full length of the loch’s northern shore but there is an alternative minor road that also runs along its southern shore. Loch Ness is especially known for its legendary Loch Ness Monster known affectionately as “Nessie” and two Loch Ness visitor centres exploiting this myth can be found at Drumnadrochit.
