The most visited art museum in the world is situated on the site of an ancient castle, the Palais du Louvre, which dates back to 1190.The building works on the Louvre as it can be seen today started in 1535 but the castle was extended several times during the following centuries. Following the events of the French Revolution it became a museum in November 1793. Nowadays, you can see paintings such as the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, or the works of Delacroix and David but also sculptures which include Alexandros of Antioch’s Venus de Milo . Since 1989, the “cour Napoleon” is covered by a glass pyramid, which was built by order of the French Prime Minister François Mitterrand.Open every day from 9a.m. to 6 p.m. closed on Tuesdays and bank holidays.
