Accommodations in Malham near Malham Tarn (Malham, United Kingdom)

Malham Tarn (Malham, United Kingdom)

Malham Tarn is the highest freshwater lake in England. It is situated within the Yorkshire Dales National Park at 377 metres (1,237 feet) above sea level and takes its name from the nearby village of Malham in the valley below, which is about 8 miles west of Skipton in North Yorkshire. Although a minor road runs from Malham village to the lake there is no public parking possible beyond the village and visitors are requested to park at the National Trust car park and access it on foot, which involves a walk of about 2 miles. The National Trust currently owns Malham Tarn but lease a part of it to the Field Studies Council, who occupy the former Malham Tarn House at the head of the lake. Malham Tarn is one of only eight upland alkaline lakes in Europe and thus provides a unique habitat for fauna and flora. The western side of lake consists of peat bogs and is a National Nature Reserve known as Tarn Moss. Access to Malham Tarn is free of charge.
