Malioboro (Yogyakarta, Indonesia)

Jalan Malioboro, or Malioboro Street is a famous shopping promenade, very popular among locals as well as tourists. It is located around 800 meters from Yogyakarta Sultan Palace. In Sanskrit Malioboro means “bouquet” and the reason for naming this street by that ancient is due to it always being crowded with flowers each time the Palace held ceremonies. Malioboro is known to be a place for trade since 1758. After 248 years, the place still persists as a trading area, it even became the icon of Yogyakarta. Malioboro is 2 kilometers long and has hundreds of shops and street-stalls offering various kind of handicrafts. This street is crowded with shops, offices, restaurants, hotels and historical buildings. In the past Malioboro served as a center during the second Dutch military aggression. In the 1970’s it became a center for artists, joining together in Persada Studi Klub (PSK) community led by Umbul Landu Paranggi until the end of 1990s. There are many vendors selling their merchandises, ranging from such local handicrafts as batik, rattan ornament, leather puppet, bamboo handicrafts (key holder, ornament lamp, and others) as well as blangkon (Javanese / Jogjanese traditional cap) and silver goods to general little things that you may find in other trading places. Along with fast-paced shopping experience, there are a number of hotels located on Jl Malioboro.
