Mardi Gras (New Orleans, USA)
The Mardi Gras, which is French for Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday, is the day before Ash Tuesday and ends the carnival season. Although the are many Mardi Gras celebrations throughout the USA the one in New Orleans are the most famous and attract every year hundred thousands of visitors to the city. The Carnival in New Orleans officially begins on January 6th, also known as the Feast of Epiphany or the Twelfth Night and ends at midnight of Fat Tuesday. The carnival season builds up slowly over the weeks and although the Mardi Gras theoretically would only be the very last day of the season it is commonly used as a reference to the whole carnival, especially the last two weeks before Ash Wednesday when minimum one parade per day is being held. The parades are organised by so-called Carnival krewes but are not the only events in the city during the carnival. There are King Cake parties, balls, costume contests and many more activities to attend. The major parades lead from uptown or mid-city New Orleans and end at the river side near the French Quarter, never in the quarter itself as the streets there are too narrow . For a timetable of events please visit the website. Please note that accommodations for the final days of the carnival season should be booked early as hotel accommodation can get tight during the Mardi Gras.
