Mehrangarh (Jodhpur, India)

Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur is one of India’s largest and most imposing fortresses. It stands on rocky promontory 122 m above the city of Jodhpur ensuring a strong defensive position in the past and offering views for miles around, including the view of the blue-painted city below. The fort was built by a leader called Rao Jodha who moved his capital city to the site of Jodhpur because it was a safe and defensible location. Building of the fortress started in 1459 although much of what visitors will see today was built two centuries later during the rule of Jaiwant Singh. The fort is open to the public and contains many buildings of architectural interest such as several palaces, temples and a museum. The museum includes treasures and curiosities such as elephant howdahs (platforms for their passengers), palanquins, armour, paintings, a collection of musical instruments and a collection of turbans reflecting the diverse ways that the people of Rajastan have interpreted the use of this head covering.
