Mission Beach is a very narrow strip of land with the sea on one side and the almost inland Mission Bay on the other. Along with the neighbouring Pacific Beach, these are reckoned to be the two most popular of the San Diego beaches. During the summer months, crowds of sun seekers kick off their shoes, along with some inhibitions, and immerse themselves in this unusually laid-back lifestyle. As a rule of thumb and to the north, Pacific Beach is considered to be the more sophisticated fruit on the table but as you head south, sophistication and other lifestyle complications just drift away, allowing fun to take over.
The action at Mission Beach centres on the Pacific-facing boardwalk. This two-mile long feature is where you’ll find amusements, restaurants, and the like. Then, the area beyond Mission Boulevard is where the beach gives way to the healthier pursuits of cycling, surfing, and scuba diving. If you wish you’d just gone fishing; no problem, just gather your tackle together and head to the jetty at South Mission Beach Park where you are bound to get hooked. Mission Beach is also close the family favourite SeaWorld San Diego and aqua park.
Eight miles away, San Diego itself is proclaimed as being America’s finest city, with some memorable dining experiences to savour in the Gaslamp Quarter.
Mission Beach and neighbouring beaches are easily accessible, being around five miles from San Diego Airport. From May onwards, hotels and beach rentals accommodation units are deluged with bookings from sun and fun seekers, but do keep a weather eye on some party pooping restrictions. Alcohol is prohibited on many beaches and there are restrictions as to when dogs are allowed. Then, particularly between November and May, look out for the marine stingers. These aren’t the characters who try to sell you stuff, but jellyfish! Pre-May, though, is thought to be the best time to visit; with lovely weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices at hotels and accommodation rentals.
Yes, it can get really busy here, but the four villages that make up Mission Beach comprise miles and miles of glorious sandy beaches. Consequently, there’s always room for everyone, and your hotel accommodation will always be near a beach.
Choosing accommodation in advance can be something of a lottery. Set among the good quality hotels are many not so good properties. The advice is to search carefully and consider possibilities such as the apartments at Clementes Calypso By The Bay! These are around half a mile from Mission Beach. Then, the good value at the lower end of the market includes bunk sleeping at California Dreams Hostel which is approximately a mile away.
The top notch, Hilton San Diego Resort & Spa is well worth the four mile drive but, whatever you are looking for, it’s sound advice to book in advance to secure the best choices and deals. It’s easy! Just visit trivago and you’ll discover that, finding your perfect holiday accommodation is, no way, a mission impossible.
