Mysore City Palace is known locally as ‘Amber Vilas’ and is the residence of the former royal family of the city of Mysore and the site of the ‘durbar’ or royal audience hall. The palace was built between 1897 and 1912 and today is open to the public as a museum and is considered to be one of the leading tourist attractions of this South Indian city. The palace is a three-storey building in Indo-Saracenic architectural style which combines elements of Hindu, Muslim and Rajput architecture with a dash of high Victorian gothic. It was designed by the British architect Henry Irwin. The palace stands in extensive gardens and is floodlit at night to the delight of photographers. The museum houses many of the royal family’s treasures displayed in richly decorated rooms. Highlights include costumes, toys, musical instruments and portraits. Significant rooms include the Marriage Pavilion and the Durbar Hall. In autumn, the palace is the central venue of a festival called Mysore Dasara with live performances on a stage in the palace grounds, parades of elephants and decorated floats.
Mysore Palace is a top attraction in Mysore, known for its unique features that attract numerous visitors each year.
