The National Cherry Blossom Festival is an annual spring event in Washington D.C. The focus of the 16-day festival are the ornamental Japanese cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin, West Potomac Park, and at other locations along the National Mall. The trees themselves are the result of gifts, first in 1912 and again in 1965, from the city of Tokyo to the city of Washington. Activities associated with the festival include a lighting ceremony for a 17th-century Japanese stone lantern (also a gift from Japan), a parade, concerts, a kite festival, art shows, family and children’s events, and a grand ball presided over by the Cherry Blossom Queen and her court. The festival has become an active expression of friendship between Japan and the United States, and many of the featured events include participation by dignitaries from Japan, the federal government of the United States, and the city of Washington.
