National Rail Museum (Delhi, India)

Considered one of the finest railway museums in the world, Delhi’s National Rail Museum was opened in 1977 and now sees over 1000 visitors every day. The museum is spread over 11 acres and the outdoor section holds over 100 locomotives and carriages dating back over 150 years. These vintage exhibits include the “Fairy Queen”, the world’s oldest working locomotive, among many others, and various saloon and dining cars which date back to the 1870s. The large, indoor museum holds models and displays of instruments, furniture and equipment as well as uniforms and other memorabilia from Indian Railways, the world’s largest railway network. Most of the outdoor exhibits are open and accessible to visitors to climb into. Combined with the train offering rides around the museum, this is a particularly popular museum for children. The museum is open fom 0930 to 1730 October to March and to 1930 April to September. Admission is Rs10 (Euro 0.20) though additional charges apply for photogrpahy or entry to special exhibits.
