The National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes is located on the periphery of Mount St. Mary’s University near Emmitsburg. These grounds have been used for Catholic worship since 1805. Construction of the grotto to replicate the original Lourdes began in 1875. The physicial setting of the shrine is a small dell on Saint Mary’s Mountain in the Blue Ridge of northwestern Maryland. Springs emerging from underground serve as the water source, some of which has been diverted into taps and blessed by priests. There is no tradition of miracles associated with this water, but believers report that it is “cleansing and healthy” and that drinking it bestows “favors and graces.” The shrine consists of a series of gardens and paths that join together Corpus Christi Chapel, the grotto cave (which contains a stone from Lourdes in France), a number of special religious memorials, the stations of the cross, mysteries of the rosary, a round pool with a statue of St. Mary, and facilities to accommodate outdoor services held from a simple altar at the grotto cave. The shrine is open daily, and Mass is conducted each Saturday and Sunday at noon. Check the home page for other services.
