National Zoological Gardens of South Africa (Pretoria, South Africa)

The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa is situated next to the Belle Ombre train station and close to A. B. Eksteen Transport Museum. It occupies both sides of the Apies River and has approximately 6 km of walkways. It was founded in 1899 and received national status in 1916. This zoo is the largest in South Africa and the only that has a national status. The zoo includes an inland aquarium and reptile park, Australian section, primate and carnivore sections and aviary. The Aquarium is the largest inland marine aquarium in the country. The third largest collection of exotic trees can be found at the Zoo as well. For those visitors, who don’t feel walking, there are golf carts and children’s push cars for hire as well as a 7 minute cable car ride. Facilities of the zoo include restaurants and kiosks, braai and picnic facilities, souvenir shop, parking and zoo train. The entrance is priced with the option to take a number of tours.
