Natural Regional Park of the High Languedoc (Bédarieux, France)

The Natural Regional Park of the Haut-Languedoc was created in 1973, and spreads over 92 communes of the Hérault and Tarn departments. It is situated at the southern point of the Massif Central, a zone of mid height mountains which cover 260,000 acres over a territory which is shared between the Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrenees regions. The park is divided into seven zones: the Black mountain, Sidobre, the mounts of Lacaune, the Caroux, the mounts of Orb, the plateau of the lakes and vineyards and valleys. 80,000 inhabitants live in the park which consists of two thirds of forest land. Its location, between the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, offers a dual climatic influence, which results in exceptional landscapes and vast biological diversity. The parks project is to protect the nature and the quality of the water, to develop tourism whilst respecting the environment and to promote the natural resources, such as agriculture, wood and crafts. France counts 45 natural Regional parks, spread over 23 regions and 7,129,800 acres, that is 14% of the French territory.
