Nelson Monument which is set on Calton Hill in Edinburgh was built between 1807 and 1816 to commemorate Admiral Horatio Nelson who had perished in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. It was built by Robert Burn and is a tall tower that has a commanding view of both the new and old town of Edinburgh. In 1852 a time ball weighing 762kg was added which allowed sea captains to set their chronometers for accurate navigation as the ball was dropped at 1pm Greenwich Mean Time each day. The ball was back in action in 2009 after a £250,000 restoration. The monument is open Summer: Monday 1pm to 6pm, Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 6pm. Winter: Monday to Saturday 10am to 3pm.
