Old Orangery (Warsaw, Poland)

The Old Orangery is one of the first buildings you come to when entering Royal Lazienki Park and gardens. It is located at the bottom of the scarp and the main entrance is guarded by two stone lions. Within its garden area are many stone statues, monuments and a fountain. The southern wing of this building which was built in the 18th century holds an exotic tree collection, while the eastern side houses the Stanislawowski Theatre. The theatre has been well preserved and is a rare example of an 18th century court theatre. The Old Orangery hosts the Gallery of Polish Sculpture with a fine collection of ancient marble and gypsum sculptures which were collected by Stanislaus Augustus Poniatowski . His plan was to place the sculptures in his Royal Academy of Art. Some paintings are exhibited in the Old Orangery. These depict the illusions of the life and times of the reign of King Stanislaus Augustus Poniatowski.
