Olympic Park Munich (Munich, Germany)
Olympic Park Munich was constructed for the Olympic Games in 1972. It is still used today as a sports venue but now also hosts conferences, functions and other gatherings. It was constructed between 1968 and 1972 and built to a design by a local firm of architects called Günther Behnisch. The site that was chosen was a vast area of flat green land known as the “Oberwiesenfeld” (upper meadow-field). The theme of the construction was to provide an environmentally friendly multi-purpose sports venue and its success led to the 1972 Olympic Games being dubbed the “Green Olympics”. Olympic Park contains several different buildings all surrounding a central lake and set within a landscaped park of over 100 hectares (250 acres). The largest building on the site is the Olympic Hall , but other buildings include an Ice Rink, Cycling Stadium, Athletics Stadium, Tennis Hall and Swimming Hall.
