Parque de El Retiro (Madrid, Spain)
El parque del Retiro or Jardines del Buen Retiro is said to be the lungs of the city of Madrid. Situated close by to the “Puerta de Alcalá”, not far from the Prado Museum. The 350 acre park is filled with monuments, galleries and a lake. The park was remodelled several times since its first monastery existence in 1505. It was in the 1630s that two of the preserved buildings were built, the “Casón del Buen Retiro”, a former ballroom, and the “Museo del Ejército”, the present day military museum. The palace staged many shows and operas until the end of the 18th century when it was largely destroyed during the Peninsula war. The park became public ownership in 1868. The major park attractions are the rose garden, the Fountain of the Falling Angel, the semicircular colonnade and the equestrian statue, monument to King Alfonso XII.
