Perperikon (Kardzhali, Bulgaria)

Situated 1,400 ft above sea level near village of Kaloyantsi, Perperikon is rich in archaeological sites which show signs of 5th millennium BC civilisations. Some of the discoveries made include the so-called “Palace”, which is thought to be the “proverbial Temple of Dionysus”. There is also a round altar which is nearly 6 ft in diameter, an acropolis and two outer cities which are still being researched. This is also the site of the Perperikon Art Festival, an annual event which started in 2001 and now ranks as one of the cultural highlights in Bulgaria. The festival is held just prior to the June solstice and details are available at the website.
