The Pinnacles National Monument in Paicines, California is an area of protected mountains that have been formed out of an extinct volcano. It has been a protected reserve since 1906. The region is divided into the East and West Divisions. The Western Division is rocky and popular with rock climbers whilst the Eastern Division features some trees and water. A footpath connects the two divisions but there is no road. The Pinnacles National Monument provides an important habitat for fauna and flora and amongst its wildlife are Mountain Lions, Bobcats and Prairie Falcons and since 2003 it has been the location of a reintroduction program for the endangered Californian Condor. The Pinnacles National Monument covers an area of 24,514 acres (9,920 hectares) and receives over 150,00 visitors per annum.
