Pirin National Park (Bansko, Bulgaria)

The Pirin Mountain is located in South-West Bulgaria. It features a typical alpine relief with rocky alpine ridges, waterfalls, glacial lakes and moraines. Its highest peak is Vihren (2,914 m). Pirin National Park was established in 1962. A protected area of 27,400 hectares is located in the northern and central mountain part. There are two nature reserves within Pirin National Park boundaries - the Bayuvi dupki - Djindjiritsa reserve which preserves the natural ancient forests of white and black fir-trees and Yulen reserve which features a great variety of forest, sub-alpine and alpine eco-systems. Edelweiss and wild goat are among the symbols of Pirin National Park. Pirin National Park is home to 113 animal species which are included in the Red Data Book of endangered species, 42 species from this list are strictly protected by law. Pirin National Park was included in the World Heritage list of Unesco in 1983.
