Place de la Concorde (Paris, France)

The Place de la Concorde is located in the centre of Paris and, measuring 86,400 square metres, it is the largest square in the city. The square was designed by Jaques Ange Gabriel who was the architect of King Louis XV. The construction works began in 1754 and lasted until 1763. After its completion the square, which originally had the shape of an octagon, surrounded by large moats, was named Place Louis XV in honour of the king. In 1792 it was renamed into “Place de la Révolution” and it’s centrepiece, an equestrian statue of King Louis XV, was replaced by the guillotine which killed thousands of people, including Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette, Robespierre, Madame du Barry and Danton. In 1795 it first was named Place de la Concorde. This would change several times again until the city of Paris finally decided to stick to the name it still holds today. Today the centrepiece of the square is the almost 23m high, 3300 year old Obelisk of Luxor, a gift to Louis Phillipe by the viceroy of Egypt in 1829. Nowadays the square hosts the annual celebrations which mark the anniversary of the French Revolution.
