Place de la République (Paris, France)

The Place de la République is a square located in the heart of Paris, touching the 3rd, 10th and 11th “arrondissements”. The République metro station is under the square itself. The square’s origins date back to around 1356 and the fountain called the Château-d’Eau was added in 1811. Later Baron Hausmann’s “city renovation scheme” had most of the theatres of the boulevard du Temple demolished, then the “casernes” were added and Gabriel Davioud, Paris’s official architect, added the second fountain with bronze lions and the “Magasins réunis” along the north side of the square in 1866. The Morice brothers won the 1879 monument designer competition to celebrate the newly proclaimed 3rd republic, in 1880. Nowadays, round the square, you’ll find cafés, crêpes and ice cream stands, French chain stores and American fast foods.
