In those early days the area was known as Plaza del Arrabel and it was only re-named Plaza Mayor after the Spanish Civil War. King Philip requested the area to be redesigned and several timber buildings were constructed around it, which were destroyed by fire 5 times. Historically the square was the scene of bullfights, executions and public ceremonies but nowadays it its function is mainly as a meeting place.
