Prado National Museum (Madrid, Spain)

The Prado National Museum or Museo del Prado, as it is known in Spanish, is a museum and art gallery located in Madrid. It houses one of the finest collections of art in Europe, including many pieces from the former Spanish Royal Collection. These include paintings from the 12th century through to the early part of the 19th century. In addition to its paintings it also houses coins, medals, sculptures, prints and drawings as well as many decorative objects and other works of art. In total there are over 1,300 paintings on display and over 700 sculptures. Many of the exhibits are from the Spanish Old Masters. The Prado National Museum opened in 1819 within one of the city’s grandest buildings. The building dates from 1785. It was taken into state ownership in 1868 and has remained so ever since. Today it is one of the most visited museums in Spain. Opening times and admission charges are available on the website.
