Preobrazhénski Monastír (Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria)

Preobrazhenski Manastir is an ancient monastery situated 6 km to the north of the former Bulgarian capital city of Veliko Tarnovo. The monastery complex is built at the foot of a cliff along the River Yantra and comprises a church, monastic buildings and a bell tower with a height of 7 meters. The complex is considered to have beeen set up in 14th century by Tzar Ivan Shishman and his mother Theodora-Sarah. Except from some ruins of the surrounding fortress wall and the monastery churches, there are no buildings preserved from this period. All building in the monastery complex which can be visited nowadays were built in the 19th century by the famous Bulgarian builder and architect Usta Kolyu Ficheto, while murals are masterpieces of the famous painter Zachary Zograf. Most of the icons are painted by Zachary Zograf’s student Stanislav Dospevski. The monastery has a library and a museum collection, which includes icons, books, historical documents and some artwork.
