The Pretoria National Botanical Garden was established in 1946. It is situated just a kilometer away from the Koedoespoort Railway Station, outside the city center. The oasis has approximately 76 hectares of gardens, more than 198 bird species and a number of reptiles. The Garden is divided into 2 different sections which are separated by a quartzite outcrop. Here visitors can see about 50% of the country’s tree species, South African plants, different ecosystems such as Savanna, forest, fynbos and some plants of other biomes. The special collections of medicinal plants, cycads, aloes, tree species, succulents and natural ridge vegetation as well as a tree Bolusanthus speciosus avenue are considered to be special features of the garden. The Pretoria National Botanical Gardens is also home to the Head Office of SANBI (South African National Biodiversity Institute). On-site facilities include a visitor center, gift/bookshop, environmental education center, concert stage and restaurant. It is open 365 days a year.
