Province House National Historic Site (Charlottetown, Canada)
Built in 1847 and located in the heart of downtown Charlottetown, Province House is both the seat of the Prince Edward Island Legislature and the birthplace of Confederation. The Fathers of Confederation met at this site in 1864 to discuss the uniting of British North America; this historic event is now commonly known as the Charlottetown Conference. Both guided and self-guided tours are available to visitors, who are encouraged to sign the guest log. A short film entitled “A Great Dream” is featured for public viewing; the film outlines the significance of the Charlottetown Conference. A gift shop is located on the first floor of the building, while the second floor features the legislature and a number of displays. The Province House National Historic Site is open to the public year round. While admission is free, donations are accepted. Metered parking is available throughout downtown Charlottetown, and this parking is free during evenings and weekends.
