Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park or St. Paul’s Subterranean River National Park as it is also known is located approximately 50 kilometres to the north of Puerto Princesa on the island of Palawan, where it is situated within the Saint Paul Mountain Range. Mount St Paul provides its highest altitude at 1,028 metres within the park. It was declared a National Park in 1992. The Babuyan River forms its eastern border and to the north is St Paul Bay, the National Park covers an area of 20,210 hectares. St. Paul’s Subterranean River National Park has been nominated as one of the “New Seven Wonders of Nature” and it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is home to many endangered birds, mammals, plants and insects. These include 15 species of birds that are known only to exist here and nowhere else in the world. Within the park is a subterranean river, at 8.2 kilometres long this is the longest underground river in the world.
