The Scandola Reserve is part of the Regional Natural Park of Corsica and is located on the west coast. It lies between Punta Muchillina and Punta Nera and includes Cape Girolata and Cape Porto, an area of 900 hectares on land, and 1000 hectares offshore. It falls into two sectors, the Elpa Nera inlet and the peninsula of Scandola. It has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage site list. The coastline is virtually inaccessible on foot and is characterised by steep red volcanic cliffs. Water and wind erosion have carved out deep inlets and left stacks and islets scattered along the coast. Wildlife is abundant: seabirds such as cormorants and sea eagles abound and the vegetation is an ‘outstanding example’ of scrubland. The clear water has a rich marine life and dolphins are not unusual.
