Red Town Hall (Berlin, Germany)

The Rotes Rathaus is the town hall of Berlin, located centrally near the Alexanderplatz, and residence of the Senate of Berlin and the governing mayor. The town hall was designed by Hermann Friedrich Waesemann in the style of the Italian Renaissance and completed in 1869. It owes its name, which literally translates to “Red Town Hall” to the red clinker bricks that have been used to construct it. Since its completion it has been the seat of the city government of Berlin, not to be confused with the district government, as Berlin is one of the 16 States the Federal Republic of Germany consists of. The building was severely damaged during WW2 and restored according to the original plans from 1951-1956. After the works were completed it served as the administration building of the government of East Berlin, while the west part of the town was served by Rathaus Schöneberg. Since October 1991 it is officially again the seat of the unified Berlin administration. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm Admission is free
