Russell Square (London, United Kingdom)

Russell Square is one of several green squares in London. It is situated in Bloomsbury and takes its name from the family name of the Dukes of Bedford on whose land it stood in the 17th and 18th centuries. All of the street lamps that surround Russell Square still bear the coat of arms of the Bedfords. Surrounding the square are many large houses, some of which have now been converted into hotels. In 2002 Russell Square was renovated and a derelict building was converted into a café, and a fountain was added in the centre of the square as its focal point. Also within the square there is a statue of Francis Russell the 5th Duke of Bedford. Outside the main gates to the Russell Square is an example of one of only 13 remaining Cabman’s Shelters. This was erected in 1875 to provide shelter for the drivers of the hansom cabs and later the hackney carriages. It is now a Grade 2 listed building. Entry into Russell Square is free of charge but the gates are locked at dusk. The nearest Underground station is Russell Square on the Piccadilly Line.
