Dating from the 12th century Sandal Castle is a Motte and Bailey type castle. In 1460 it was the location for the famous “Battle of Wakefield”. Today the site is mainly ruins but part of the keep is relatively well preserved. There is a car park and a visitor centre. The site is owned by Wakefield Museums and Arts Department and it is open daily throughout the year. Access is free. The Visitor Centre is open: Monday to Sunday 11.00-4.00pm (Summer) Saturday and Sunday 12.00-4.00pm (Winter)
