Schoenbrunn Palace (Vienna, Austria)

Schönbrunn Palace is a former Royal Palace in Vienna that was used as the summer residence of the Habsburg monarchs from its construction in 1569 until the fall of the Austrian monarchy in 1918. It stands on the site of an older palace called Katterburg. The name Schönbrunn meaning “beautiful well” in English, derives from an old well within the grounds that once provided fresh water for the house. The palace stands in landscaped gardens which include a bird garden and zoo. The zoo, known as Tiergarten, dates from 1752 and claims to be the oldest zoo in the world. There is also a maze and an orangerie. One of the most famous residents of the palace was the Emperor Franz Josef 1 of Austria who was born here and spent most of his life at the palace right up to his death in 1916. Following the demise of the monarchy in 1918 the palace was taken into state ownership and turned into a museum and tourist attraction shortly afterwards.
