Skyscraper No. 21 - Baťa's Skyscraper (Zlin, Czech Republic)

Building No. 21 (Baťa’s Skyscraper) in Zlin is a 17-floor, 77m high office building which was constructed between 1937 and 1938 as the administrative headquarters of the Bata shoe company. It was at the time the second tallest building in Europe. It was designed by a Bata architect Vladimír Karfík and was part of the visionary development combining Garden City principles and Le Corbusier’s modernist ideas that the Bata brothers instigated in Zlin where their (now internationally successfull) shoe company started. It was constructed at the order of Jan Antonín Baťa who had his office there, based in a moving lift,completed with a sink and air-conditioning.
